• Short Porch’s guide to the best eateries in Brooklyn

Brooklyn is the only place on Earth where you can smell the come hither of authentic Doro Wat, witness two drunken delinquents in a street fight, and bump into Steve Buscemi all within 30 seconds of leaving the front door. The 30 seconds that follow will no doubt be another non-sequitur of surrealism.

Perhaps that’s why its music scene has always been so good. How can you not write good songs when the world around you is an unspooling cesspit of sounds, scenes, lyrics, and leitmotifs? Presently, Short Porch are the best Brooklyn group around. The rabble-rousing group capture the unique mayhem of modern life. They write and perform as a unit with their finger to the pulse of society.

So, with that in mind, we figured that Brooklyn’s finest new band would be well-placed to tell us about Brooklyn’s finest eateries. Which, it would seem, is pretty much tantamount to a list of the world’s finest hip restaurants, because, to use the horrid parlance of our times, it seems that Brooklyn is where it’s at.

As Anthony Bourdain said after his last visit to the boho spot, “A lot of films that take place in Brooklyn, it’s always about people looking over across the river at Manhattan, trying to figure out how the hell do I get out of here. But right now, this is God’s country, everybody’s moving here.”

So, what’s good in God’s country now? Well, from the best tacos to the quick coffee, Sean McNulty of Short Porch takes us on a virtual tasting menu from the tacos of Bushwick to the best spot to grab brunch should you find yourself in Queens.
