Shopping find a new sound on ‘Initiative’ ahead of their new record

With a huge new LP on the way next year, alongside some massive tour dates across Europe and North America on the horizon, it’s fair to say that the end of 2019 is shaping up nicely for angular art-punk gems Shopping. And now, to top it all off, we’ve only gone and made them our Track of the Day.

The new album All or Nothing arrives February 2020 and will see the band expand their viewpoint and address the mediocrity of modernity and the need to evolve. All the while providing a sound that is purposeful and positive yet utterly compelling for any non-left-footed among us.

While the band is now locationally further apart than ever, settling on two different sides of that famous pond, their music and voice feel more laser-focused than ever. New song and video ‘Initiative’ is a testament to that, by adding polish to their output they have crystallised the message.

Lead single ‘Initiative’ is a thumping and clumping bounce into the New Year. Introspective and observant at the same time the song is demanding and engaging from the very first sharp notes.

Taking on governments that shirk responsibilities and yet place the blame on individuals, the song has a frustrated and deeply angular groove that’s jarring and pulsating in equal measure. The accompanying video, directed by Jack Barraclough, is a poptastic and highly stylised affair starring the band themselves.

Four albums in, Shopping are as committed and focused as ever, regardless of any distance. “We found ourselves singing about being true to yourself, in an often binary and belligerent digital age, and reclaiming agency when it feels like our personal freedom and privacy is constantly eroding.”
