Shawn Smith, singer of Seattle bands Pigeonhed and Brad, has died
Shawn Smith, the singer in a string of bands born out of Seattle, has died at the age of 53.
Smith, who is well known for his work with Pigeonhed and Brad, also made music with Satchel, The Twilight Singers as well as recording as a solo artist.
Smith died due to complications from diabetes, it has been confirmed.
Following the news of his death, fellow musicians have begun taking to social media to pay their respects. Posies founder and occasional R.E.M. member Ken Stringfellow, said: “So sad to wake up to the news about the passing of Shawn Smith. Shawn and I shared a mutual close friend, and thus Shawn would frequently house sit for me when I was on tour, writing (and sometimes recording) on my piano.
He added: “The gentlest of gentle souls, with a voice that came from the deepest regions of the spirit… I hope he finds peace and rest on his soul’s onward journey.”
Alice In Chains bassist Mike Inez, said: “God speed to our friend Shawn Smith. One of the great Seattle voices. Rest In Peace Brotherman.”
