Shane Hawkins to tour with Taylor Hawkins’ old band Chevy Metal
Shane Hawkins, the son of the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, is set to tour with his father’s band Chevy Metal across this summer.
18-year-old Hawkins will assume his father’s mantle behind the kit of the cover band’s latest North American tour, taking in stops including Denver, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, before concluding in Agoura Hills in California.
Forming the band in 2013, Taylor Hawkins’ vision for Chevy Metal was as a 1970s dirt rock cover band and they acted as a fun-filled side-project away from the seriousness of Foo Fighters.
Since his untimely passing in 2022, his son has played with Chevy Metal on both their 2023 and 2024 tours, and will now take over the role as the group’s drummer as he gains an increasingly prominent status in the rock music sphere.
Having already performed with his father’s main band, Foo Fighters, at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert in September 2022, then giving a poignant rendition of the band’s 1997 hit ‘My Hero’, Hawkins has followed in his father’s prolific footsteps from a very early point in his career.
To that end, since the Foo Fighters parted ways with their current drummer Josh Freese on May 16th, rumours have swirled that the young Hawkins could be being lined up to become the group’s latest member ahead of their much-vaunted live return at the Singapore Grand Prix later this year.
Freese has hit back at the band since his firing, posting a mocking comment on social media which speculated the “ten possible reasons” that he could have lost his job, including not going to the studio when “Mercury was in retrograde” and insisting on starting every rehearsal with a “20 minute cowbell sound bath”.
For the part of Chevy Metal, however, tickets for their upcoming tour will go on sale on May 23rd at 9am local time, while a presale will begin on May 21st.
