Shame announce new album ‘Cutthroat’ and reveal tour dates

Shame have unveiled details of their new album, Cutthroat, shared the emphatic title track and announced plans to tour the UK and Europe later this year.

For the album, the South London five-piece teamed up with Grammy-winning producer John Congleton, best known for his extensive work with St Vincent. The record, which they recently previewed on June 4th at Brixton Jamm, is set for release on September 25th at Brixton Jamm.

Cutthroat promises to be a statement of intent for the band as they rail against those in power with frontman Charlie Steen saying of the album: “It’s about the cowards, the cunts, the hypocrites. Let’s face it, there’s a lot of them around right now.”

He also noted: “This is about who we are. Our live shows aren’t performance art – they’re direct, confrontational and raw. That’s always been the root of us. We live in crazy times. But it’s not about ‘Poor me.’ It’s about ‘Fuck you’.”

Shame also allowed themselves to experiment on the record with the kinds of electronic music that Sean Coyle-Smith made for fun on the tour bus, which he previously thought wouldn’t fit with the band’s sound, finding a home on the record. The guitarist shared: “This time, anything could go if it sounded good and you got it right.”

‘Cutthroat’ is the first exhilerating teaser from the album. Steen explains of the track: I was reading a lot of Oscar Wilde plays where everything was about paradox. In ‘Cutthroat’, it’s that whole idea from Lady Windermere’s Fan, ‘Life’s far too important to be taken seriously’”.

The childhood friends will be touring Europe later this year. The tour kicks off in Paris on September 28th and will visit a vast array of cities, ranging from Nijmigen to Cluj, over a six-week period before they bring the show to the UK.
