Seth Rogen says ‘Pineapple Express’ sequel may happen “one day”
Seth Rogen has spoken about the possibility of a Pineapple Express sequel, which he admitted could happen “one day”.
The initial movie, released in 2008, has reached cult classic status, and while Rogen doesn’t currently plan to write a sequel, he has not ruled out the prospect of it happening in the future.
During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, host Andy Cohen asked Rogen about the chances of a sequel, to which the comedian replied, “Maybe. We can probably sell it to streaming or something.”
Cohen then said he believes there is “big demand” for a follow-up to the classic comedy. Rogen responded, “There could be. You never know. I don’t know. I’m not great with sequels. It’s not where my mind goes, but maybe one day.”
During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show in 2020, Rogen previously explained they did plan to make another Pineapple Express movie, which failed to materialise. “We tried to make one. Thanks to the Sony hack, you can actually find the email when Sony decided to kill the movie and not make it,” he said.
Rogen added: “It was something we were very open to several years ago, but Sony was not that interested in it.”
A major stumbling block to a Pineapple Express sequel is the erosion of the friendship between Rogen and his co-star James Franco. In 2018, Franco was accused of inappropriate sexual behaviour by multiple women. He was later accused of manipulating acting students into exploitative sexual situations, and he wound up settling one case against him out of court.
Last year, Franco claimed their friendship was dead to Variety. “No. I haven’t talked to Seth,” he admitted. “I love Seth. We had 20 great years together, but I guess it’s over. And not for lack of trying. I’ve told him how much he’s meant to me.”
