Sei Ashina, the celebrated Japanese actress, has died aged 36

Japanese actress Sei Ashina has passed away at the age of 36, her death is suspected to be by suicide.

Ashina was reportedly found at her apartment on Monday, according to reports by Japanese media. The reports state that the actor was discovered by her brother, who began to become worried after she stopped replying to his texts and calls which led him to visit the apartment to check on her.

The tragic news was subsequently confirmed by Ashina representatives, who said: “The detailed situation is currently under investigation, but we would like to ask the media to consider the deep sorrow of their families and refrain from interviewing them.”

They added: “We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the kindness of Ashina during her lifetime and pray for the souls of all of you.”

Ashina starred in the 2007 historical drama Silk alongside Keira Knightley, she also had prominent roles in the 2002 drama The Tail of Happiness as well as Japanese TV series Nanase: The Psychic Wanderers and Ship of Theseus, which was released earlier this year.

Ashina’s death is the latest in a spate of high profile suicides involving Japanese talents, following on from the tragic deaths of actor Haruma Miura in July and reality show star Hana Kimura in May.
