Saoirse Ronan reveals she wants to be a ‘James Bond’ villain
Irish star Saoirse Ronan has been acting since she was a child, appearing in many acclaimed dramas that have helped to establish her as one of her generation’s greatest talents. With her career only heading upwards, she is now ready for even more ambitious roles.
The actor is eager to join the James Bond franchise as a villain, a role women don’t usually play in the popular movie series. While there have been various villainous female characters throughout the decades that 007 has graced our screens, few have had prominent roles on the same scale as the male villains.
When many people think of women in the James Bond series, they think of Bond girls, but Ronan is ready to challenge the role of female characters in the franchise – that’s if her dream to bag the ideal role is fulfilled.
On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Ronan confirmed that she is desperate to star in James Bond, to which the interviewer, Josh Horowitz, explained, “They’ve never done the young female main villain,” to which Ronan agreed and added, “I think her and Bond don’t get together or anything – she’s a villain, like Javier Bardem vibes.”
She also suggested that the character would have to have a different hair colour because she’s “conscious of being blonde because I feel like a lot of villains in movies, they always make them super blonde and good-looking.”
Asked if she wanted to continue that tradition, Ronan emphasised that she’d want to “break” it, although it would be down to do “whatever Barbara [Broccoli] wants.”
The actor also stated that she “can’t see [herself] doing Marvel” and that she would much rather be in a Bond film. It appears as though Ronan has thought about being in James Bond for quite some time.
Who will star in the next ‘James Bond’ movie?
There has been little information about the new Bond movie, although many people have been speculating who will take over Daniel Craig’s role. It seems all eyes are on Aaron Taylor-Johnson, while fans are also considering Barry Keoghan and Jack O’Connell as potential new leaders of the franchise.
Earlier this year, Pierce Brosnan threw his support behind Taylor-Johnson to take over the reigns. “I think the man has the chops and the talent and the charisma to play Bond, very much so,” he said on The Ray D’Arcy Show, before recalling the time they worked together on a little-seen 2009 drama. “One of the first movies we made, one of the earliest movies, was The Greatest. And he was the greatest in it.”
Furthermore, in 2023, producer Barbara Broccoli told The Guardian of her plans for the next film, “I think these movies reflect the time they are in, and there’s a big, big road ahead reinventing it for the next chapter and we haven’t even begun with that.”
It appears that the new Bond movie won’t be released anytime soon, so we can only hope that Ronan is actually considered for a part. She certainly has the acting chops to be the next villain.
