Sandra Bullock’s late blooming friendship with Jennifer Aniston: “We were from that time”

Sandra Bullock was attending her friend’s wedding in 2010 when she connected with a fellow guest: an actor she spent much of the ’90s competing with.

At the time, both were climbing the Hollywood ladder, and working together wasn’t exactly on the cards. But as the wedding natter carried on, it turned out Bullock and Jennifer Aniston had more in common than either of them had clocked – each passing remark just proved it a little more.

For starters, both women dated Tate Donovan in the ‘90s, who starred in Love Potion #9 with Bullock and Friends with Aniston. They also both had a deep, abiding love for interior design and got their kicks out of pranking co-stars. As the wedding evolved from a beautiful ceremony to a boozy dinner and eventually a hectic night on the dancefloor, the two hugely famous and successful ladies spent the evening throwing shapes, necking shots, and trading Hollywood war stories.

“We were just like, ‘Oh my God, we need to meet and cut loose,’” Bullock laughed when recounting the tale to Vanity Fair. “And we did.”

After the dust settled and the hangovers had run their course, though, both stars wondered why they’d never gotten together before. They were at a mutual friend’s wedding, yet had never even considered seeking each other’s company before. Then, it hit Bullock like a freight train: Hollywood didn’t want them to be friends, and it had just taken a decade to realise that the industry had played them – and plenty of other female stars – off against each other.

“We were from that time in the business where no one wanted the ladies to be friends,” Bullock sighed. “It was about pitting everyone against each other. We were told we weren’t supposed to…like, respect, and honour each other.”

Jump ahead 15 years, and their bond’s only grown stronger. These days, Bullock and Aniston have each other’s backs when things start to feel a bit too much – like those moments when one of them just can’t face stepping outside, having had enough of what comes with being one of the most recognisable women in the country. In that scenario, the other swoops in and helps shepherd their friend back to the world.

“It does create a mindset where your home also unfortunately becomes your fortress,” Bullock admits. However, when Aniston shows up to rescue her, “There’s a motivation of going, ‘Okay, we need to go somewhere. Where are we going?’”

Heartwarmingly, they share a fear of flying, but are always available as a support blanket for each other. “The two of us on a plane—it’s the most pathetic thing to look at,” Bullock chuckled. “Usually it’s us grabbing each other’s arms from across the table with our heads down.” In 2023, after Bullock lost her long-term boyfriend Bryan Randall to ALS, she was “not in a great place”, which made her panic particularly badly about an upcoming flight. So, Aniston held her hand for the entire journey, talking her through every bump and shudder like it was nothing.

All in all, it’s tough not to feel like Bullock and Aniston are making up for lost time, given how close they’ve become over the years. That kind of natural bond makes it all the more daft that they were kept apart for so long by an industry that thrives on pitting people against each other – turning actors into rivals instead of recognising them as potential mates. Here’s hoping Hollywood in 2025 isn’t still quite so determined to keep its leading women at odds… though, let’s be honest, it probably hasn’t changed all that much.
