Sam Raimi comments on ‘Spider-Man 4’ rumours

For many years, rumours have been circling that director Sam Raimi would be willing to reunite with the actor Tobey Maguire and make a fourth Spider-Man movie together, following their trilogy of the 2000s.

Beginning with Spider-Man in 2002, Raimi and Maguire delivered one of the most popular superhero franchises and followed up with 2004’s Spider-Man 2 and the less-well-received Spider-Man 3 in 2007.

At one point, Raimi had indeed been developing a Spider-Man 4 with Maguire, but eventually, the film was scrapped, leading to a reboot of the movies with Andrew Garfield. However, since Maguire appeared in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home, the rumours have sparked up once again.

In a new interview with CBR at WonderCon, Raimi finally spoke of the Spider-Man 4 rumours, noting, “I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!’”

Tom Holland remains the actor who plays the famous Marvel superhero, and Sony and Marvel are said to be working on a fourth movie in his personal series. Raimi said of Holland’s efforts, “I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey [Maguire] again in it.”

He added on the prospect of a fourth Maguire film, “I haven’t talked to Tobey about [a fourth movie with me], but maybe Marvel has or Columbia Pictures. I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, I’m on great terms with them. I’m sure I would hear about it if it was in the works.”

Furthermore, Maguire himself would be interested in returning to his famous web-slinging role, as he once told Marvel, “I love these films and I love all of the different series. If these guys called me and said, ‘Would you show up tonight to hang out and goof around?’ or ‘Would you show up to do this movie or read a scene or do a Spider-Man thing?’ it would be a ‘yes!’ Because why wouldn’t I want to do that?”

Kirsten Dunst, who played the role of Mary Jane Watson in Raimi’s trilogy, has also said that she wouldn’t turn down the chance to play the character once again.
