“So incredibly talented”: Sadie Sink names the best actor of her generation
Say what you like about how Stranger Things ended, but you have to admit that the series has made a bunch of people very, very famous.
The Netflix series offered a route back to superstardom for Winona Ryder and laid the groundwork for a bunch of future stars. Millie Bobby Brown might have gotten the biggest boost as the series’ de facto main character, but most of the young cast members have received a considerable leg-up, such as Sadie Sink.
The redheaded youngster joined the series in season two as the feisty, strong-willed Max Mayfield, and after quickly rising up the ranks and becoming a major character, Sink began to spread her wings and explore her options elsewhere. Following appearances in acclaimed films like The Whale and the Fear Street series, she now firmly stands on her own two feet; not bad for someone who almost missed out on their big break.
At the time of writing, Sink is still in her early 20s, with a long, hopefully successful road ahead of her, and despite barely being old enough to drink in her home country, she’s been in the business long enough for her opinion to be extremely coveted. Elle India wanted to know which of the actor’s similarly-aged peers she was most impressed by, and to the dismay of her Stranger Things cohort, she settled on a name from outside of Hawkins, Indiana.
“My favourite actor from the younger crop would have to be Julia Garner,” she said, “I think she’s so incredibly talented in Ozark and Inventing Anna”.
Not to be confused with Jennifer Garner (which I do an embarrassing amount of the time), Julia broke onto the scene for her aforementioned role in Ozark, another Netflix show, where she plays Ruth Langmore, a young criminal pulled into the central family’s money laundering scheme. This role earned her much praise, including a nomination at the 2023 Critics’ Choice Awards, at which Sink was almost nominated, and in 2022, she starred as the titular con artist in Inventing Anna, landing herself further nominations from several prestigious organisations.
Over the past couple of years, Garner and Sink have both joined the ever-expanding singularity known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the former making her MCU debut in Fantastic Four: First Steps as a gender-swapped incarnation of the Silver Surfer.
She does a great job in a fairly limited role, although there was some hoopla about a woman playing a traditionally ‘male’ role, even though the character has been depicted as female in the comics; clearly, anyone who made those complaints hadn’t bothered to do any research. As for the latter, she’ll be appearing in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and while her role is a closely-guarded secret, many have speculated that she could be portraying Peter Parker’s perennial love interest, Mary-Jane Watson.
Both of these stars are very talented performers with a lot to offer over the course of their careers, even though it is funny to hear Sink refer to Garner as part of the ‘younger crop’, as she’s a full eight years older than her.
