Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds has earned global recognition as well as critical acclaim for his portrayal of the iconic superhero Deadpool, including Golden Globe bids and nominations at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. Reynolds’ new project is Free Guy, a sci-fi action comedy that imagines an interesting development inside the world of a video game.
Reynolds stars as an NPC (non-playable character) in an open world video game who gains sentience after the incorporation of a new program. The film conducts an existential investigation of free will and self-determination, following in the footsteps of popular sci-fi works like The Matrix.
While comparing his own personality to the character, Reynolds said: “Well, my default is just pure trash, on the inside. So this is slightly new for me. There’s something really wonderful about playing a character who’s kind of naïve and innocent.”
Adding, “I think there’s something really fun about exploring everything with new eyes, which is what this character gets to do, and filtering that through the prism of comedy and occasionally cynicism. I love playing a character who’s stepping out from the background into this new person.”
The film is set to be directed by Shawn Levy who is known for his work on the Night at the Museum films and Stranger Things. “Every filmmaker wants the stories they tell to be seen as loud and as big as possible… We live in a brave new streaming world, and I very much have some feet in that world as well,” the filmmaker commented.
He continued: “But Free Guy was made with one goal in mind, which is collective delight. That is an experience you can feel on your couch at home, but it feels really different with other humans in the dark.”
According to Reynolds, Free Guy isn’t just a reductive take on video games: “It’s interesting to me, Everybody says ‘it’s a movie based on a video game’. I really don’t think Free Guy is a video game movie. That’s like saying Titanic is a movie about boatmanship.
“It’s a movie about so much more. But I loved the narrow target we had to hit to create a world which felt authentic to gamers, and then still smuggle this other story into that.”
Free Guy will finally be released in August after several delays due to the pandemic. Watch the trailer for Ryan Reynolds’ latest film below.
