Rosie O’Donnell confirms move to Ireland due to Donald Trump’s election win
American actor and comedian, Rosie O’Donnell recently shared that she has moved to Ireland and has revealed she specifically emigrated to get away from the Donald Trump administration.
O’Donnell, who starred in A League Of Their Own, Will & Grace, Nip/Tuck as well as films like Sleepless in Seattle, has Irish heritage. Her father moved from County Donegal during his childhood, and she said she is currently “in the process” of getting her Irish citizenship.
However, the reason for her move has less to do with her connection with her roots and more about safety. “Although I was never someone who thought I would move to another country, that’s what I decided would be the best for myself and my 12-year-old child,” she said in a TikTok as she and her 12-year-old child, Clay, made the move.
Since the start of Donald Trump’s second run as president, things in America have been getting tough with tariffs putting prices of groceries and electricity up, growing unrest in the country’s relationship with other nations, and even the rights of minority groups, including those in the LGBTQ+ community, like O’Donnell.
Since his inauguration, some Republicans in red states have been busy filing anti-LGBTQ+ bills, especially targeting same-sex marriage with an aim to secure a Supreme Court ban on the federally protected right.
For O’Donnell, a lesbian raising her children in America, this was clearly incredibly worrying. “It’s been heartbreaking to see what’s happening politically and hard for me personally as well. The personal is political, as we all know,” she said.
“I miss my other kids. I miss my friends. I miss many things about life there at home, and I’m trying to find a home here in this beautiful country,” O’Donnell added, “And when it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back.”
O’Donnell is not the only celebrity to emigrate from America recently; Ellen DeGeneres has also made the move and in her case, moved to the UK.
