Rosamund Pike hails “inspiration to all” David Bowie: “Just resolutely himself”
Rosamund Pike is a huge fan of David Bowie, pegging him down as her current obsession for his resolute independence, originality and imagination.
In an interview with Perfectly Imperfect, an organisation which uncovers what stars are currently obsessed with, Pike turned her attention to the ‘Starman’.
Beyond a new wellness book by Nathan Hill and a sandwich shop in Notting Hill, Pike shared that she recently went to the David Bowie Lightroom surround experience.
The 360 experience showcases Bowie’s landmark performances, using rarely seen and never-before-exhibited material selected meticulously from the David Bowie Archive in New York.
Gushing about the grandeur of the experience, she recalled to Perfectly Imperfect about watching the screens on every wall: “I don’t know how tall they are, 20 feet or something, and it’s moving. It also reminds you that as an artist, you can’t kowtow to the system. You’ve got to speak your truth.”
She added, “David Bowie, when he speaks to journalists who are trying to trap him into an answer, he’s just resolutely himself, and he can see when someone’s trying to mess with him. He’s just an inspiration to all.”
This is a pertinent lesson for the Gone Girl actor, who is currently starring in the hit Suzie Miller play, Inter Alia, at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre, which will run until June 20th and then transfer to Broadway’s Music Box Theatre in New York later in the year.
She shared that the Bowie exhibition is “also about the way he takes inspiration and what, as an artist, you’re trying to do in connecting with an audience.”
Mentioning her current project, Pike shared that Bowie’s ideas about live performance were “moving”, because “it is the experience of any live event when you are living it truthfully and connecting with your audience.”
Bowie, who famously played several caricatures for the media, had an ethos which was “not about the fourth wall,” Pike explained. Rather, his perspective was “about dismantling it, in some ways,” a similar pursuit to Inter Alia.
The 47-year-old star added, “His experimentation, his lyrics, the way he was constantly looking for inspiration from outside himself. I think that’s what we should all do, and what I try to do.”
