Robert Smith, Brian Eno and Jane Fonda join over 200 artists calling for a Fossil Fuel Treaty
Over 200 artists worldwide, including Jane Fonda, Brian Eno, Robert Smith, and Susan Sarandon, have joined the mission to call on world leaders to support a Fossil Fuel Treaty amid a crushing heatwave in western Europe.
As of June 25th, over 200 artists have added their names to an open letter which stresses the need for a global Fossil Fuel Treaty, which will move to “end fossil fuel expansion, phase out existing production in an equitable manner, and invest in a just and sustainable future”.
The new signees have added their voice to long-time supporters such as Emma Watson, Mark Ruffalo, Massive Attack, and Coldplay.
The artistic and cultural sector is now formally joining the international movement for a Fossil Fuel Treaty. The proposal already brings together 18 countries, thousands of scientists, faith leaders, health professionals, parliamentarians, Indigenous communities, trade unions, and more than one million individuals worldwide.
The letter opens, in part, with the rallying cry: “We are artists, musicians, actors, performers, poets, filmmakers, dancers, writers and creators. We are storytellers and dreamers. We are messengers of emotion and amplifiers of hope. And we are adding our voices — loud, clear, unrelenting — to the global call for a Fossil Fuel Treaty.“
Addressing her new devotion to the cause, Fonda shared, “We are living through a time of fires, floods and bombs where our children’s future is being stolen by the fossil fuel industry that values profit over life. But history tells us that when people stand up together and speak out, change happens.”
She added earnestly, “We cannot wait one more second to save our planet and save ourselves.”
Legendary producer and musician Eno added, “Artists are people who imagine other worlds and offer us the chance to explore our feelings about them. With multiple crises unfolding across our world, that kind of imagination has a vital role to play.”
He also called on fellow artists to sign the letter and support the cause for “a more peaceful and sustainable future”.
