Robert Redford’s Instagram account to be deleted in honour of his legacy
The death of Robert Redford has been confirmed on his Instagram page. It’s also been revealed that his account will soon be deleted in honour of his legacy.
The news of the legendary actor and director’s death was confirmed by his publicist in the early hours of the morning of September 16th, who said he passed away while sleeping at his home in Sundance, Utah, while surrounded by loved ones. He was 89 years old.
Ever since, tributes have been pouring in from across the film industry for Redford, who starred in iconic movies such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and also pioneered a movement of independent cinema through the Sundance Film Festival.
However, his death has now been fully confirmed on his Instagram – with the handle @robertredfordofficialpage – in a short statement which said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Redford,” before adding, “In honour of his legacy, his Instagram account will be deleted.” The post was simply captioned with an emoji of a broken heart.
On the Instagram account, which has over 4,700 followers, Redford fittingly reflected on the highlights of his life and career after he celebrated his 89th birthday last month, as he said: “Firstly, I want to thank my fans been with me through every step, from Butch Cassidy to Ordinary People, and your support has meant the world. Your love for my work keeps me grounded and grateful.”
Noting that his proudest achievement was “sparking the indie film movement,” Redford added in the post from August 18th: “I hustled through small TV roles, learned on Broadway, and took risks directing and building Sundance. Personal losses, like my son Scott’s death, taught me resilience. It was grit, passion, and a love for art that got me here.”
Hollywood stars have honoured Redford in light of his death, including co-star Jane Fonda, who said in a statement, “It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.”
Meanwhile, Morgan Freeman wrote on X: “There are certain people you know that you’re going to click with. After working with Robert Redford on Brubaker in 1980, we instantly became friends. Working with him again in An Unfinished Life was a dream come true. Rest peacefully, my friend.”
