Robert Pattinson involved in new project inspired by ‘Catch a Predator’ for A24

Robert Pattinson has joined the team on a new project as documentary director Lance Oppenheim turns his focus to fiction for the first time. For his debut in this new realm, Oppenheim is taking on an A24-financed crime reporting flick with Pattinson on the production team.

Oppenheim is best known as a documentary filmmaker who has gathered a cult following for his stylistic approach to the form. His work includes 2024’s Ren Faire, which explored about the Texas Renaissance Festival, and he also looked into sperm donors in Spermworld. In both cases, Oppenheim merged tight nonfiction storytelling with a clear passion for cinematography and an empathetic eye on his subject matter.

Now, he’s turning his focus to the world of fiction as he takes on his first made-up story and debut feature-fiction film project. Oppenheim is immediately going in with the big leagues as the movie, titled Primetime, is being funded by A24. As the company behind major films like Pearl, Midsommar, Everything Everywhere All at Once and recently, A Different Man, the company has become the destination for independent films, gaining its own fans as a company that trust their output to be good.

Oppenheim also already has a powerful star behind it. Robert Pattinson has signed on as part of the production team. The actor is involved through his production company Icki Eneo Arlo. He’s joined by Brighton McCloskey, Range’s Brian Kavanaugh Jones and Fred Berger, and Square Peg’s Lars Knudsen, Tyler Campellone and A24 veteran Ari Aster. Alongside Oppenheim, the film’s script writer Ajon Singh will also be the executive producer.

Little is known about the film’s plot or genre yet. It is reported to follow a journalist who takes on an underground world of crime and changes television forever in the process. Deadline reports that the movie is inspired by To Catch a Predator, the NBC program put on as part of Dateline, as well as its host Chris Hansen, though the studio hasn’t yet confirmed this detail.

While there is also no knowledge about the film’s cast, some sources claim that Pattinson is also signed on to star in the movie. The actor is currently locked into a few upcoming projects, including Bong Joon-ho’ Mickey 17, a new thriller called The Drama alongside Zendaya and Alana Haim. He’s also scheduled to return to his iconic superhero role in The Batman Part II.

More details will be revealed about Primetime in the future, but for now, Oppenheim is still on a high after the release of the three-part documentary season Ren Faire, a project that undoubtedly secured his future directorial star power.
