Robert Duvall death: Tributes pour in for the Oscar-winning actor

Robert Duvall, the American actor who made his name in movies such as Apocalypse Now, The Godfather, M*A*S*H, and Tender Mercies, has died aged 95.

In a Facebook post on Monday, 16th February, Duvall’s wife Luciana shared the news of his death, writing, “Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort.”

She added, “His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented.”

After making his feature film debut in 1962 playing Boo Radley in an adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird, Duvall launched a career that would see him working with countless legends of Hollywood. Through a career spanning decades, he worked repeatedly with Francis Ford Coppola, becoming one of his favourite actors and most essential casting picks.

Having collaborated and inspired so many performers throughout his lengthy career in film, television and theatre, tributes are flooding in for the well-loved and respected actor.

Actor Michael Warburton wrote a tribute to Duvall on X, stating, “RIP one of my favourite Actors of all time – the Oscar winning ROBERT DUVALL.”

Actor and comedian Steven Webber shared a scene from Tender Mercies, writing on Threads, “My favorite Robert Duvall moment. So simple. So real. So human. Still tending to life even in the face of so much pain. Thank you, thank you, thank you sir. Art will save us. You did your bit nobly.”

Jamie Lee Curtis shared her admiration for Duvall in a tribute on Threads, stating, “The greatest consigliere the screen has ever seen. Bravo, Robert Duvall.”

Podcast host Bill Simmons wrote on X, “RIP Robert Duvall An all-timer and a one of one.” He listed several of Duvall’s most notable works before adding, “One Oscar, 6 noms. Will always wish Duvall/Coppola figured out Godfather 3.”

Stephen King shared his tribute to Duvall on X, quoting one of his most famous lines saying, “‘I love the smell of napalm in the morning!’ RIP Robert Duvall.”

Robert Patrick, who starred alongside Duvall in Jayne Mansfield’s Car, shared a selection of personal photos alongside a memory of their final day together and wrote on X, “I am gutted. Robert Duvall I will miss you brother.”
