Robbie Williams shares collaboration with Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi and announces new album ‘Britpop’
Robbie Williams announced details of his new album, Britpop, and shared the lead single ‘Rocket’, featuring Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi.
The former Take That member’s forthcoming album will be released this autumn through Columbia Records. He will also preview material from Britpop on his upcoming stadium tour, which will take place across the UK and Europe this summer.
In a statement, Williams explained that the album has been 30 years in the making and that it is the record that he wishes he had made after leaving Take That in 1995.
The singer shared: “I set out to create the album that I wanted to write and release after I left Take That in 1995. It was the peak of Britpop and a golden age for British Music. I’ve worked with some of my heroes on this album; it’s raw, there are more guitars and it’s an album that’s even more upbeat and anthemic than usual.”
On the musical contents of the record, Williams added: “There’s some ‘Brit’ in there and there’s certainly some ‘pop’ too – I’m immensely proud of this as a body of work and I’m excited for fans to hear this album.”
A specific release date and full tracklist are expected to be announced in due course.
News of the collaboration with Iommi was leaked last year by drummer Karl Brazil, who also plays on the track, in an episode of the Percussion Podcast. Brazil shared: “I’ve been fortunate enough to do some songs with him and he’s actually done a track called Rocket with Tony Iommi, which is very random. It’s great. It’s a rocker and it’s really, really cool. Right up my street.”
This summer, Iommi is set to bid farewell to his Black Sabbath career with the band set to play at Birmingham’s Villa Park on July 5th for a huge homecoming show before Ozzy Osbourne retires from performing.
