The latest project of British filmmaking icon Ridley Scott, The Last Duel, has received its first trailer, starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Adam Driver.
The historical drama follows a Knight, Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) who is forced to do battle with his squire, Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver), after Jean’s wife Marguerite (Jodie Comer) accuses Jacques of raping her. It marks Ridley Scott’s latest foray into the brutal world of a bygone era, following 2014s Exodus: Gods and Kings, 2010s Robin Hood, as well as his classic Gladiator released in 2000.
Perhaps what makes the project so exciting is that it is penned by both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, with the last time they collaborated on a screenplay resulting in an Academy Award for their work on Good Will Hunting. Whilst Damon largely went on to focus on acting, Affleck went into the 21st century with a future in screenwriting on his mind, writing Gone Baby Gone in 2007 and action thriller The Town in 2010.
Damon and Affleck join Nicole Holofcener, writer of 2018s excellent Can You Ever Forgive Me? to produce the screenplay for Ridley Scott’s film that also features contemporary superstar Adam Driver, who continues to thrive in the focal point of the cinema industry. Having only recently appeared in Leos Carax Cannes darling Annette, alongside Marion Cotillard, Driver will return in Scott’s medieval romp, which judging by the trailer looks to be a wonderfully enjoyable (if violent) ride.
The Last Duel is released in cinemas on October 15th, with Ridley Scott’s film Gucci, also starring Adam Driver set for release later in 2021 too.
