Ricky Gervais has wonderfully offered to step up and host the 91st Academy Awards in the wake of Kevin Hart’s decision to step down.
Hart offered to walk away from the position just hours after being awarded the job following the emergence of a string of anti-gay tweets he posted almost 10 years ago.
Gervais infamously hosted the 67th, 68th, 69th and 73rd Golden Globe Awards to a controversial reception. In 2010, the comedian was made the master of ceremonies: “I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don’t turn down.”
However, Gervais’ presenting style is as uncompromising as his stand up. Some of the jokes were met with rapturous applause, others left Hollywood A-listers scolding in offence. Regardless of the split, there’s no doubting his entertaining value.
So, in the wake of Hart’s decision to walk away, Gervais valiantly strides into the picture upon his horse with an offer to save the day: “Dear cunts in charge of The Oscars, let me host your show, and I promise I won’t offend anyone. Not even Mel Gibson, who you nominated last year,” he said on Twitter.
