Richard Swift, a former member of American indie rock band The Shins, has died aged 41.
Swift died in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Tacoma, Washington. A post on Swift’s Facebook page read, “And all the angels sing ‘Que Sera Sera.’”
“Today the world lost one of the most talented musicians I know,” Dan Auerbach, Swift’s bandmate in the Black Keys and the Arcs, wrote in an Instagram post. “I will miss you my friend.”
Swift had been battling illness and, only a week ago, Far Out reported the appeal by his family who desperately tried to raise money for urgent medical bills.
Swift, who was also a member of Dan Auerbach’s band The Arcs, played with The Shins between 2011 and 2016 and was valiantly battling a serious illness in hospital.
The musician’s Facebook page asked fans to help the GoFundMe campaign to reach its $100,000 target to pay for urgent medical help. The appeal fell just $13,000 short of its target.
“Dear friends of Swift,” the statement begins. “Richard needs your love and support now as he is up against some tough odds.
“He has been hospitalised due to a serious medical condition. He is receiving excellent care in Tacoma Washington and everything is being done to allow his body time to repair and heal.
“He is uninsured and the cost of the care he is getting is a lot. If you can afford to share the weight of this burden, it would be most deeply appreciated. Anything helps.
“Mostly thank you for supporting our beloved Richard and his family.”
