Richard Ayoade directs new music video for Kim Deal’s ‘Big Ben Beat’
Kim Deal has shared the new music video for her track ‘Big Ben Beat’, which was directed by Richard Ayoade.
‘Big Ben Beat’ is taken from Deal’s most recent studio album, Nobody Loves You More, which arrived last November. The video for the new single also features Ayoade along with his family, as well as Deal and Savages drummer Fay Milton.
For the video, Ayoade worked alongside longtime collaborators, including directors of photography Erik Wilson and Christopher Ross, plus editor Chris Dickens.
In a statement, Ayoade said of his love of Deal: “Kim Deal has few equals – the starting point of her work is genius. And then it goes up from there.”
The video for ‘Big Ben Beat’ marks the second collaboration between Deal and Ayoade. In 2018, he directed the music video for The Breeders’ track ‘Spacewoman’.
Ayoade has been a fan of Deal’s work since first hearing The Breeders as a teenager. He travelled from his home in Ipswich to London to purchase their debut album, Pod, which remains one of his favourite records.
“It was almost frightening as a record, in a way,” he told Tidal in 2018. “I had never heard anything like it. It seemed so individual. It’s pretty hard to do a cover of a Beatles song that’s better than the Beatles, but I’d say [the Breeders’ ‘Happiness is a Warm Gun’] is better than the Beatles’.”
Meanwhile, Deal is set to commence on a new solo tour, which begins on February 20th in Dayton, Ohio, and concludes on March 30th in San Diego.
This summer, Deal will travel to Europe for a series of festivals and headline shows, including a performance at London’s Roundhouse on June 20th. The Breeders vocalist will also visit Dublin, Manchester and Wolverhampton.
