‘Repo Man’ director Alex Cox returning for upcoming sequel
Alex Cox‘s 1984 cult classic Repo Man is finally getting a sequel, with the original director returning behind the camera for Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer.
The sci-fi black comedy starred Emilio Estevez as Otto, who lands a job working for Harry Dean Stanton’s enigmatic Bud. When he finds himself tasked to repossess a car with a $20,000 price tag, he sets out with Olivia Barash’s Leila to track down the vehicle and its contents, which are said to be out of this world.
Kiowa Gordon will be stepping into Estevez’s shoes as Otto, with Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer picking up 90 minutes after the end of the first film, which concluded with the souped-up Chevy Malibu at the centre of the story heading off into the farthest reaches of outer space.
The production team has stated their desire to “deliver an enthralling mix of punk energy, existential comedy, and unconventional storytelling, navigating the absurd and chaotic world of Repo Man into a new age of nuclear brinksmanship and driverless cars.”
Spinoff Repo Chick, also written and directed by Cox, was released to little fanfare in 2009. However, The Wages of Beer will seek to emulate the enduring success of its predecessor, which offered biting takedowns of consumerism and science fiction against the backdrop of a thumping punk rock soundtrack and madcap antics.
Producer Adam Harris Englehard said of his involvement in the sequel: “Growing up, Repo Man was one of my favourite films. So to get the opportunity to work on the sequel with everyone involved is incredibly exciting.”
As of yet, no release date has been revealed for Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer. Watch the trailer for the first film below.
