Remembering when Johnny Cash and June Carter covered Bob Dylan live

Delving into the Far Out Vault we’ve found a gem of a cover by Johnny Cash and June Carter who took on Bob Dylan’s iconic track ‘It Ain’t Me Babe’.

The performance, which is dated 1973 and during a live show in Australia, sees husband and wife duo Cash and Carter duet on the track which is taken from Dylan’s fourth studio album, Another Side of Bob Dylan, which was released in 1964.

Dylan and Cash were longtime admirers of each other’s work and, within a year of Dylan releasing ‘It Ain’t Me Babe’, Cash had recorded his own version alongside his wife and included it as part of his album Orange Blossom Special.

“Country music is slow to jump on any trend,” Cash once said in an interview with Rolling Stone back in 1968. “But we’ve been affected greatly by the sound of the Beatles and the lyric of Bob Dylan.”

The song, so closely linked to Cash, was also used as part of the 2005 film about Cash’s life, Walk the Line, and was performed by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon on the film’s soundtrack.

For now though, we take a step back in time and enjoy Cash and Carter in action:
