British actor and documentary maker Reggie Yates is primarily known for his work in game shows like Prized Apart as well as popular series including Doctor Who. Starting his acting career at the young age of eight, Yates was well-versed in the entertainment industry since he was a child.
Looking back on his formative years, the actor acknowledged how important London was to his cultural background: “I was born and bred in London, a diverse city bursting at the seams with creative talent, and I’ve been lucky enough throughout my career to meet and work with some incredible people from the world of British photography, film, fashion and music. It’s not just through my work though, there is so much creativity around every corner in this country for all to enjoy.”
Yates has decided to step away from his usual stints as television presenters and other acting bits in order to pursue his real dream. He is set to release his directorial debut titled Pirates which has been in the making for quite some time now. Although the production was disrupted in 2020 due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Yates’ new project is finally ready for the world.
“It’s a bit of a weird position to be in,” Yates admitted. “It’s only in the last few years that projects I’ve created and written have started to get green-lit, which is very exciting.” His career does seem to be gaining momentum now and further directorial projects will certainly be predicated on the success of Pirates.
Described as “the worlds shortest road movie,” Pirates follows a group of friends who travel from north to south London in order to score the tickets to the biggest party around. Set on New Year’s eve of 1999, it will be a coming-of-age film about young teenagers who are not only stepping into an exciting period in their lives but a new century as well.
