Rebel Wilson suffers serious setback in lawsuit with ‘The Deb’ producers
Rebel Wilson has faced a serious blow in her ongoing legal battle with the British producers behind her directorial debut, The Deb.
The chaos first came to fruition in 2024. Before her debut eventually premiered as the closing film of that year’s Toronto International Film Festival on September 15th, she took to Instagram on July 31st, calling out producers Amanda Ghost, her husband, Gregor Cameron, and executive producer Vince Holden.
Wilson alleged that Ghost sexually harassed actor Charlotte MacInnes, and later colluded with The Debstar to cover it up. She also accused Ghost, Cameron, and Holden of intimidation, as well as embezzling funds from the movie.
However, as per Deadline, LA Superior Court Judge Thomas Long has thrown out the majority of Wilson’s claims. She can no longer pursue the claim that Ghost grooms young women and stole credit for James Blunt’s song ‘You’re Beautiful’.
The judge declared these claims “immaterial and abusive.” She has been denied the opportunity to amend her case, too.
Her case now consists of fair-dealing claims against AI Film (run by Ghost), as well as allegations against the producers that caused her emotional distress.
Judge Long has also granted Ghost permission to conduct limited discovery in relation to her defamation lawsuit, which centres on so-called “smear websites” that made allegations about the producer being the “Indian Ghislaine Maxwell.”
Ghost and colleagues accused her of commissioning the websites, which allegedly contain “malevolent” and “racist” lies.
However, Wilson has “unequivocally” denied any role in “conceiving, planning, registering, directing, creating, writing, or posting the content of the websites.”
In response to the update, Camille Vasquez, The Deb producers’ attorney, has shared: “With Ms. Wilson’s claims dismissed, the case now focuses on her conduct, including serious questions about the source of smear websites deploying racist, false and abusive content to target Amanda Ghost—those issues will be pursued zealously in discovery.”
