Producer Village Roadshow files for bankruptcy amid ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ dispute

Film production company Village Roadshow has filed for bankruptcy in the US amid an ongoing dispute with Warner Bros over the release date for the movie The Matrix Resurrections.

The producer, which has been behind huge blockbusters like Mad Max, Ocean’s 11, and Joker in the past, declared the financial blow on March 17th following an extensive and complex legal battle with its longstanding corporate partner, after Warner Bros decided to release the 2021 sci-fi sequel on streamer Max the same day as it came out in cinemas.

As a result, Village Roadshow sued the company for a break of contract, subsequently entering into a protracted legal process which has ultimately sunk the former’s ability to operate.

In its bankruptcy documents, Village Roadshow said: “The company historically enjoyed a prolific co-production, co-financing and co-ownership relationship with WB, which included the production, ownership and derivative rights flowing from 89 titles – including the Matrix franchise – and comprised the vast majority of the Debtors’ business.”

It noted that legal fees for the case had racked up to $18 million, “nearly all of which remain unpaid,” it added, “present[ing] the threat of a potential arbitration award that could flatten the company’s balance sheet.”

Village Roadshow continued: “Even if the WB arbitration is resolved, the company believes that it has irreparably decimated the working relationship between WB and the company, which has been the most lucrative nexus for the company’s historic success in the entertainment industry.”

As a production company based in both the US and Australia, Village Roadshow has struggled to recuperate itself, like many Hollywood corporations, after the toll of both the pandemic and the 2023 writers’ strike.
