The painfully awkward moment Prince kicked Kim Kardashian off his stage
Prince, a truly unique artist, is still deeply missed by fans worldwide. When The Purple One took the stage, his magnificence captivated all eyes. Few individuals on the planet could command a stage quite like him, particularly one as grand as Madison Square Garden – something Kim Kardashian would find out to a toe-curlingly awkward degree.
During Prince’s Welcome 2 tour, the legendary artist performed over 80 shows from 2010 to 2012. Experiencing something of a career renaissance, he travelled across North America, solidifying his legacy with a series of critically acclaimed performances. In the early stages of the tour, he brought the show to New York’s Madison Square Garden for a four-night residency, where Prince showcased his exceptional talent, as always.
Taking things to typically eccentric fashion, Prince had managed to arrange his stage to be built in the shape of his iconic love symbol. During the run of dates, the singer invited several well-known faces to join him on stage for a jam session, dance or general good time. In what was a hugely popular feature, the likes of Naomi Campbell, Whoopi Goldberg, Jamie Foxx, Alicia Keys, Questlove, Sherri Shepherd, Cornel West and more all had their time to shine next to The Purple One.
On the final night of his Madison Square Garden residency, Prince hunted for a lady in one of the star-studded front rows to join him on stage. He then spots Kim Kardashian and invites her to join him. He immediately begins dancing around her in his trademark groovy tones. However, the pressure clearly got to Kardashian, who then laughed nervously while standing in place and clapping for him before Prince instructed her, in no uncertain terms, to “get off my stage”.
Kardashian later discussed the incident during an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, when she told Ryan Seacrest: “I was just so nervous, and I was just, like, laughing. To my defence, like, didn’t [Prince] watch Dancing with the Stars? Like, I’m not a good dancer.”
Following that incident, Prince and Kardashian never crossed paths again. It appears that Prince didn’t forget her chaotic performance on stage with him, as he reportedly declined to participate in an episode of New Girl alongside Kardashian’s family members, as detailed by Zooey Deschanel.
The New Girl actor admitted to Conan O’Brien, stating that Prince loved the sitcom so much that he penned an email asking if they could squeeze him into an episode, to which they more than happily obliged.
The writers then created a storyline to somehow shoehorn him into an episode and decided to make him host an exclusive celebrity party at his home. They needed to fill the room with A-listers because it was a celebrity party. Production staff then managed to secure Khloe Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner, to participate.
However, according to Deschanel, Prince asked which names they had been recruited to fill his celebrity party on filming day. “I hope it’s not a Kardashian,” he said. Prince had reportedly told production staff that he would never invite a Kardashian to any of his real parties, so why would he have them at a fictional event?
The team working on the show needed to quickly usher Kardashian and Jenner off-set before Prince spotted them. They then destroyed all evidence that the Kardashians had ever been a part of the episode, burning the script and call sheets to prevent Prince from ever finding out about their involvement.
