Prime Video shares first trailer for video game adaptation ‘Fallout’

27 years after the release of the first game in the series, Fallout is finally coming to live-action, with Prime Video unveiling the first trailer for its episodic adaptation.

Through five main games and several spinoffs, gamers have gotten to know the ins and outs of the post-apocalyptic wasteland that used to be America, which is being shepherded to the screen by creators Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner, alongside executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

The story unfolds in an alternate history where survivors of a catastrophic nuclear event have taken solace in shelters known as Vaults. Two centuries later, Ella Purnell’s Lucy emerges into the hostile wasteland of Los Angeles, where she’ll encounter all sorts of friends, enemies, and creatures.

Walton Goggins, Dale Dickey, Michael Emerson, and Kyle MacLachlan are some of the other recognisable names set to feature as a myriad of human and mutant characters alike. Prime Video will hope Fallout has the potential to be a major crossover hit when it premieres on April 11th.

Video game adaptations face the difficult task of appealing to existing fans of the source material while also bringing in newcomers. At a virtual press conference ahead of the trailer’s release, Far Out asked Nolan how he planned to strike that balance.

“I don’t think you really can set out to please the fans of anything, or please anyone other than yourself. I think you have to come into this trying to make the show that you want to make it and trusting that as fans of the game, you know, we would find the pieces that were essential to us about the games and try to do the best version of those that we can,” he said.

Nolan continued: “I think, you know, it’s kind of a fool’s errand to try to figure out how to make people happy in that way. You gotta make yourself happy. And I’ve made myself very happy with the show.”
