Primal Scream thank Simone Marie Butler for “feminine glamour” following bassist’s departure

Primal Scream have thanked Simone Marie Butler for, among other things, her “feminine glamour”, after the bassist announced her departure from the iconic band.

Butler joined the group in 2012 following the exit of Gary ‘Mani‘ Mounfield, who left to participate in The Stone Roses’ reunion. Following this, she remained part of their live band until 2025.

She announced her departure on January 28th, writing online, “It truly has been an amazing ride with genuinely beautiful people. So so many incredible times, laughs and experiences. That’s the dream right there. Bobby, Andrew and the band are incredible musicians and people.”

Now, the band have responded with their own statement, which thanked Butler in turn for her “positive energy” and “committed musicianship”.

On social media, Primal Scream began, “We had 13 fabulous years with Simone. During her time with us, she brought positive energy, feminine glamour and committed musicianship to the band.”

They went on, “Her warmth of character, kindness and gentleness lit up proceedings wherever we found ourselves in the world. We have a lot of great memories, and she will forever be part of the Scream family. We wish her the best of luck and good fortune in her future adventures.”

The band has still not announced who will be taking her place permanently.

In November last year, Mani, the original bassist for Primal Scream, passed away at the age of 63. His death was announced by his brother, Greg, who wrote on Facebook, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother, Gary Mani Mounfield. RIP RKID.”

Though her departure was only announced this week, Butler did not perform with Primal Scream in December at the Roundhouse in London, which was a special anniversary show in support of their 2000 album, XTRMNTR.

Primal Scream are set to play several festivals in the summer, including Truck Festival in Oxfordshire and Victorious Festival in Portsmouth.
