Today’s Track of the Day takes us back to 2002 to mark the untimely loss of Robert ‘Throb’ Young. The former Primal Scream member passed away yesterday and will in part remembered for being the driving force behind the Glaswegian rockers’ most pulsating and enthralling LP in the shape of Evil Heat.
The record was very much a continuation of the heavier, industrial sound that was featured on the band’s previous album XTRMNTR, which marked a complete change in direction from the psychedelic hedonism that characterised Young and Bobby Gillespie’s early career together.
In the name of such a poignant cause, we could have chosen the more reflective moments found on Screamadelica or Give Out But Don’t Give Up to pay our respects, but instead we would like to say goodbye with the exhilarating spirit and everlasting shot in the arm that came from ‘Rise’ and Young’s seething guitar being pushed right to the front of the mix.
Revisit the whole of Evil Heat when you get the chance, you won’t be disappointed. But in the meantime, bring in the start of the weekend with the unadulterated rock ‘n’ roll of ‘Rise’. RIP Throb.
