PJ Harvey issues stern warning to fans about rampant online scams
PJ Harvey has long been noted for her uniqueness and originality. However, she is merely one of many PJ Harvey’s that exist online. The alternative artist’s management have since addressed in a statement about a growing number of scams.
“The PJ Harvey management team is aware that there are many scam accounts impersonating PJ Harvey, or members of her team,” the statement begins. “While every effort is made to shut these down, fans are asked to be vigilant and report any impersonators.”
It is unclear what currently prompted the statement. However, the message clearly hints at the exploitative potential of fake accounts. As it continues: “Please disregard any accounts, comments or messages inviting you to send a friend request or a DM.”
They added: “As a rule of thumb, if it seems too good to be true, or feels like an unexpected or unusual request, it should be disregarded and reported.” Concluding by posting PJ Harvey’s only official details.
The post highlights an increasing problem in the arts. Recently, Taylor Swift grabbed the headlines after AI generated images portrayed her in a damaging light. However, the various fake accounts out there exploiting fans exhibit how falsification can be far subtler and used to exploit fans.
There has recently been a rampant rise in fake accounts being set-up that then target fans and DM them purporting to be the celebrity asking for charity donations for a cause they support, offering exclusive tickets, or offering entry to prize giveaways.
PJ Harvey is one of the first major artists to step forward and address this, however, little legislation regarding accounts is currently in place on social media to help prevent such scams.
