Pity Party Anthems Vol.1

Welcome one and all! To the Pity Party! Feeling sorry for yourself? Prefer to spend your Valentine’s Day amongst a bevvy of tear stained tissues and emptied bottles of vodka then man, do we have a playlist for you?

Static Lines – The Creases

Ever spent a night at a party watching the one you love with the one they love? This is a song about that (and it’s catchy as hell).

Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me – The Smiths

Who screams misery more than Morrissey? Answers on a postcard to the usual address please.

I Want You – Elvis Costello

A song as simple as it’s title. Unrequited love with a pop-kick – perfect for crying out lyrics.

I Asked For Water (She Gave Me Gasoline) – Howlin Wolf

There isn’t a genre more fitting for some self-loathing than the blue and here Howlin’ Wolf takes it to another level. Get ready.

Yesterday – The Beatles

Apart from being the one of the only Beatles numbers to only feature one Beatle and one of the few songs McCartney wrote on his own, it’s also about a lost love. Woe is we.

Everybody Hurts – R.E.M

Although this is one of the saddest songs ever written (and reportedly the song Kurt Cobain was listening to when committing suicide) it was a point of contention in the office. Why? Its title ‘Everybody Hurts’. I’m sorry but this pity party has a closed door policy and there is only room for one. So for the purpose of this list we will change the name to ‘Mainly I Hurt’.

Love Hurts – Nazareth

At last we come to the crescendo of crying in to your pillow. Nazareth’s ‘Love Hurts’ has to be the most perfectly pitiful song we have ever heard. Enough passion to cry and powerful enough to scream, what more could you want?

Pity Parties can get kind of lonely, but i guess that’s the point, right? We just hope you found some love or comfort in this list and if not love then at least the pity you deserve. You poor sod.

Please pity yourself responsibly.
