Pink Floyd to re-release ‘Live at Pompeii’ concert film in IMAX

Pink Floyd’s highly influential 1972 concert film is returning to cinemas. Filmed in Pompeii in 1971, the movie of the band’s iconic live performance is being rereleased into IMAX.

Pink Floyd’s Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii is one of the most iconic and influential concert films ever made. With no audience beyond the crew filming it, it is simply the band, their instruments and Pompeii’s ancient Roman amphitheatre in a city once buried under volcanic ash.

Not only is the film visually striking, but it also captures the group at a key turning point in their career. Shortly before they would release The Dark Side of the Moon, this concert archives the band’s sound before this momentous reinvention into a bigger, bolder, and more cinematic sound and a period of high commercial success. Instead, they’re playing songs from their 1971 album, Meddle, as well as a selection of even older cuts.

Initially released in September 1972, the film immediately won the favour of both film and music critics. Now, it’s returning to cinemas for a new generation of fans to enjoy.

It’s set for release into IMAX cinemas and other screens on April 24th, 2025. Additionally, it will now also get a soundtrack release for the first time on May 2nd, 2025.

Having been restored to 4K quality, it has been a personal passion project of those involved. “Since 1994, I have searched for the elusive film rushes of Pink Floyd at Pompeii,” said Lana Topham, the band’s director of restoration, “So the recent discovery of the 1972 original 35mm cut negative was a very special moment.”

In 2016, David Gilmour returned to Pompeii without the band to perform a concert in the same place – although this time with a concert. Back in 1971, they were the first ever band to play in the ancient amphitheatre.
