Phoenix has confirmed that they are currently recording a new album at a Paris studio.
The French pioneers haven’t released a record since 2017, a period when they shared their sixth studio album Ti Amo. However, it now looks like the four-piece are working on the follow-up to that record. Last year saw the band whet fans’ appetite by releasing ‘Identical’, a track which featured on the soundtrack for Sofia Coppola’s film On The Rocks.
Coppola is married to frontman Phoenix Thomas Mars so getting the opportunity to work with his wife was an alluring one. “We tried I don’t know how many,” Mars said to The Wrap about the track about working with his partner. “We tried from our own personal collection of demos and nothing worked, but it seemed like the demo to ‘Identical’ had a tempo and an atmosphere that Sofia liked right away, so we had to finish it.
“There are many coincidences that are happy accidents, but once you listen to the song, that works with the Felix and Laura relationship,” Mars added to the publication. “That has a father-daughter echo to the relationship. It’s rare enough that those moments happen, and it makes sense and was meant to be, so we embraced it.”
The band has now provided an update on Instagram by sharing a black-and-white video that captures the group playing together at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. “New Year, new studio,” the band captioned the post. They also used the hashtag #7, which confirms that the seventh-record is currently in the proverbial oven.
