Phoebe Bridgers smashed into studio 8H to make her Saturday Night Live debut last night and did so in true rock and roll fashion by destroying her guitar during a brilliant two-song performance.
The historic show, which arrived as the 900th episode to date, was hosted by Canadian actor Dan Levy who enjoyed plenty on-screen jokes with Bridgers in the build-up to the big night. In the promo released for the episode, Levy and Bridgers appeared alongside SNL cast member Aidy Bryant, when host Levy asked: “Phoebe, since we’ve been bonding this week, I wonder if you could, like, maybe write a song about me or something?”
“I think I’m good on that,” replied Bridgers. “Thanks though,” she added with her dry humour.
Instead, Bridgers rolled through two fantastic renditions of her own material which included ‘Kyoto’ and ‘I Know The End’, both tracks that appeared on last year’s brilliant album Punisher. ‘Kyoto’, an undoubted alt-pop masterclass, is pumping with the passion and promise of a new generation, it’s one of the more expansive tracks on the record and shows Bridgers is capable of walking the tight rope of commercial and credible without a second thought.
However, while the first track set the tone nicely, it was Bridgers’ rendition of ‘I Know The End’ which captivated the audience. Supported by a seven-piece band, lost herself in the moment and the unruly performance of the album closer resulted in sparks flying and a smashed-up guitar.
