Phoebe Bridgers enlists Maggie Rogers for cover of Goo Goo Dolls’ ‘Iris’

Having just announced her Copycat Killer EP, a record comprised of four re-recorded classics from her album Punisher, Phoebe Bridgers has now shared a cover of Goo Goo Dolls nineties classic ‘Iris’, with help from Maggie Rogers, as a way of keeping her election day promise.

On November 3rd, as America awaited the results of the election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, Bridgers took to her Twitter account to share a simple message of hope: “If Trump loses I will cover ‘Iris’ by The Goo Goo Dolls”. While we’re not saying this prompted some Trump fans to switch allegiances purely to hear the cover but, if they did, Bridgers has made good on her statement.

What’s more, the cover even comes with another stellar singer-songwriter in the form of Maggie Rogers who helped Bridgers complete the recording which you can hear below. Released as a “pay-what-you-want” on Bandcamp, the proceeds from the song will go to aid Fair Fight, a voting-rights organisation.

Many people had assumed that Bridgers tweet was a simple joke but things were somewhat amped up when Goo Goo Dolls themselves tweeted the singer suggesting we were all waiting for the cover. Bridgers didn’t disappoint either and delivered quite possibly the definitive version of the song.

Bridgers and Rogers’ vocals intertwine with a graceful elegance that shows that despite not working together in any consistent way, the two singers in question are more than talented enough to turn it on when needed. Lilting and delicately balanced, it may be the first time we’ve truly enjoyed ‘Iris’.

So, get yourself over to Bandcamp to pick up the track for a good cause and while you do listen to the song in all its splendour below:
