Philip Selway hints at possible Radiohead return
After spending recent years working on various side projects, Radiohead drummer Philip Selway has provided fresh hope the band will make a return in the near future.
The last project from the alternative rock titans was their 2016 album A Moon Shaped Pool, after which the members splintered off to work on various side projects. Selway released his third solo record, Strange Dance, in 2023, and has now spoken up about the chances of the group finally coming back together after their prolonged hiatus.
During a recent appearance on a live stream with the Crow Hill Company on November 24th, Selway opened up about Radiohead reuniting, stating: “We’ve actually had a little break for a minute; the last show that we did was back in 2018, but we’re coming back ’round to that point now.”
The drummer continued: “We’re all coming back around to that point now of thinking, ‘Right, we’ve had a break — this is it. This feels like something to dive back into and really explore and see what other directions it can take us in.'”
Selway also cited the power of the band’s chemistry as the reason why they will continue, explaining, “There is just something particular to that relationship — that creative relationship and personal relationship — actually, you can’t get anywhere else.”
Following the band’s last proper studio album, Radiohead have also looked back at earlier records in their back catalogue. In the years since A Moon Shaped Pool, the band have been putting out multiple re-releases of their album OK Computer and Kid A for anniversaries, featuring new tracks fans hadn’t previously heard in their finished form.
Outside of Selway’s side projects, other members of Radiohead have been able to work on their creative pursuits, with Colin Greenwood recently embarking on a tour alongside Nick Cave. Ed O’Brien has also been working on solo material and contributing to the reimagined version of Paul McCartney’s latest album, McCartney III.
Despite Selway hinting at a Radiohead return, lead vocalist Thom Yorke and guitarist Jonny Greenwood are currently busy with their side project, The Smile. The group, which also includes Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, recently confirmed that they will continue into 2024 with the announcement of their latest album, Wall of Eyes, arriving on January 26th.
