Personal Trainer share second single from ‘Human Assholes’

Indie rock Dutch collective Personal Trainer have shared their second single, ‘Moping’, from their forthcoming album, titled Human Assholes.

The album, which will drop on September 4th via Bella Union, is the highly anticipated follow-up to their well-received second album, Still Willing, which was released in 2024.

A month ago, the collective released the album’s first single, ‘Punch Drunk Love’, which borrows its title from the Paul Thomas Anderson film of the same name, and came accompanied by a video as charming as its namesake.

Frontman Willem Smit has now elaborated on the second single, ‘Moping’, sharing, “To me, Moping is mostly about being a musician and getting stuck inside your own loop a little bit. The song keeps circling back on itself lyrically and musically.”

The track, which is bolstered by a chorus of female vocals cheerfully singing “daa-daa-daas, sees Smit “professionally moping around again and again”.

He added, “That looping feeling is reinforced by all the self-reference in the lyrics too – almost like a kind of navel-gazing meta glitch. I was listening to a lot of Callahan & Witscher, as well as They Might Be Giants – they influenced the song pretty directly.”

After the album’s release, the band will be supporting Human Assholes on tour throughout the UK, kicking off with a Rough Trade show in Nottingham and including stops in cities like Leeds, Liverpool, London, Brighton, and Cardiff.

Far Out gave their previous release, Still Willing, three-and-a-half stars, observing, “Amsterdam-based outfit Personal Trainer have dedicated themselves to breathing new life into the indie genre, through an eclectic blend of styles and songwriting themes.”
