Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron steps down after 27 years
Matt Cameron, the longstanding drummer of Pearl Jam, has stepped down from the band after performing with them for the past 27 years.
The band made a joint statement with the drummer on X on July 7th, in which Cameron first said: “After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam. Much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter.”
He added: “I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It’s been an incredible journey. More to follow. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”
The remaining members of the band then continued the statement by saying: “Matt Cameron has been a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer. He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings. It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music.”
Despite Cameron’s split from the group seemingly being amicable per the tone of the statement, no official reason for his departure has been given at this time.
The drummer initially joined the band in 1998 after Jack Irons, having already risen to prominence as a member of Soundgarden since 1986.
Becoming Pearl Jam’s longest-serving drummer, Cameron made his debut with the band during their Yield Tour of the US, before recording the hit ‘Last Kiss’ with them to secure his permanent position. The band’s most recent album, Dark Matter, was released last year.
