Paul Mescal reveals the actors that “inspire” him

Paul Mescal has opened up about which specific actors he takes inspiration from.

In a recent Vanity Fair interview, Mescal opened up about his career thus far. Chatting about his upcoming movie, Hamnet, in which he stars opposite Jessie Buckley, he said the pair were plunged into a “dream world” while shooting the project.

He shared, “It just opened up the bottom of everything before we even started, so it felt like we were walking around exposed the whole time.”

The pair will play William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes, as they grieve the loss of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet. Mescal continued, “It allowed me and Jessie to skip about 15 years of knowing each other. I was like: This is a person for life now.”

This closeness was evident as he described which actors he was inspired by; his biggest insight came when he reflected to Buckley on the connections he has forged thanks to his career: “I was saying to Jessie the other day, it’s crazy that our friendship group is my favorite actors in the world,” he mused.

Mescal went on to add the names of exactly which actors he was referring to: “Josh [O’Connor], Andrew [Scott], Saoirse [Ronan], Daisy [Edgar-Jones].”

Mescal starred alongside O’Connor in the upcoming romance drama, The History of Sound. He starred alongside Scott in All of Us Strangers, Ronan in Foe, and Edgar-Jones in the global sensation, Normal People.

He added, “I don’t spend time often talking to them about acting. They’re just my friends. But I’m inspired by them.”

Starring alongside Buckley and Mescal in Hamnet, the adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, Joe Alwyn will star as Bartholomew, while Hamnet will be played by Jacobi Jupe.

Mescal’s other ongoing project will see him take on another recognisable face. Mescal will play Paul McCartney in the four Beatles biopics set for a 2028 release.

He will take on the Liverpudlian’s likeness alongside co-stars Barry Keoghan, who will play Ringo Starr, Harris Dickinson, who will play John Lennon, and Joseph Quinn, who will play George Harrison.
