Paul Mescal shows support for London Trans+ Pride demonstration: “Trans rights are human rights”

Paul Mescal has shared his support of the forthcoming London Trans+ Pride protest, which will return to central London on July 25th for its eighth official year.

This marks the Gladiator II star’s first public statement on trans rights, in which he shared, “I’m incredibly proud to stand in support of my trans friends and the wider trans community.”

Mescal continued, “Given the political climate at the moment, it feels more and more pressing that we make our voices heard. This is a moment for respect, safety and recognition. Trans rights are human rights.”

The theme for the march this year is ‘Our Future, Our Fight’, linking directly to Mescal’s point. Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of a woman is, and must be, based on biological sex, which will exclude trans women from single-sex services.

However, allies in the British capital and beyond are fighting for a better future, as they are set to take to the streets to demand better rights, visibility and healthcare for transgender and non-binary people.

Plenty of other famous names have endorsed the forthcoming event, including Mel B, who described the upcoming demonstration as a way to “show up loud and proud”.

She added, “Every single person deserves to live freely and be exactly who they are in a world that accepts and embraces every culture, every class, every race and every one.”

Official organisers for the event have encouraged “friends, family, colleagues, and anyone who believes in dignity and equality” to march alongside the trans community on the day.

London Trans+ Pride organiser EM Williams has explained, “Why do we keep fighting? Because there is hope. Our future is that hope, with the catalyst of love, believing in genuine human empathy and the desire for everyone to be treated with respect, dignity, equality and equity.”
