Paul McCartney shares tribute to Marianne Faithfull: “It’s very sad to think that I won’t be meeting her again”

The Beatles’ Paul McCartney has shared an emotional tribute to Marianne Faithfull, who passed away aged 78 on January 30th.

Faithfull’s death was confirmed by a spokesperson, who issued the following statement: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull. Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.”

At this stage, no cause of death has been revealed. Following complications with Covid-19, Faithfull revealed in 2021 that she was no longer capable of singing, which forced her to enter retirement. She had also previously beaten breast cancer in 2006.

Now, McCartney has remembered Faithfull by sharing a poignant message on social media in memory of his late friend.

“What sad news that Marianne Faithfull has passed away,” McCartney began his eulogy by writing on Instagram. He continued: “She came into my life in the Sixties and was a beautiful, sweet 17 year old who radiated innocent joy. Then through the years I was lucky enough to run into her and to become a life-long friend.”

McCartney signed off his message by adding: “It’s very sad to think that I won’t be meeting her again but my memories of our encounters over the years will always bring me joy. May god bless you Marianne and guide you in the next steps of your journey.”

In light of her death, The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, who was once in a relationship with Faithfull, shared on X: “I am so saddened to hear of the death of Marianne Faithfull. She was so much part of my life for so long. She was a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer, and a great actress. She will always be remembered.”

Meanwhile, Warren Ellis, who collaborated with Faithfull on the relentlessly captivating final album She Walks in Beauty, shared a short but bloody beautiful tribute. He wrote: “Farewell Queen. I love you.”

Additionally, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich shared: “Thank you, Marianne… For the good times For your kindness For the great stories For your fearlessness …And the biggest Thank You and Fuck Yeah for your incredible and unique contribution to our music, and for always being so willing to join us in performing it…and partake in the ensuing shenanigans! Rest in Peace”.
