Paul McCartney shares his playlist, featuring Tame Impala, The Kinks and Daft Punk
Paul McCartney has shared the songs that are currently on his playlist in a new Q&A.
McCartney, who is due to release his new album The Boys of Dungeon Lane later this month, explained how music has become a way to bond with his grandson Arthur, with whom he makes playlists.
When asked if he ever makes playlists, McCartney wrote on his website, “I do sometimes, yeah. If we’re having a party and I want a dance list, I’ll make one. I’ve also done it with my grandson, Arthur, which has been really nice.”
He added, “We sort of cobbled one together; a mix of old rock ’n’ roll favourites and some newer tracks. It turned out pretty good.”
In response to being asked if he and his grandson have similar tastes or about whether it’s an exercise in showing each other new music, McCartney said it was “a bit of both”, before explaining, “I’ll show him things I think will work, and then he adds to it, we’ve got a collaborative playlist. A friend of his who’s a painter even knocked up a little cover for it.”
Then, he finally shared what is currently on the playlist, adding, “Because we were big friends with Jimmy (Buffett), ‘Margaritaville’ starts it all off, followed by ‘All of the Lights’ and then we go into like Daft Punk, and Tame Impala, which Arthur likes.”
The playlist also includes The Kinks’ classic ‘Waterloo Sunset‘, as well as Donovan’s ‘Sunny Grodge Street’, and Dominic Fike’s cover of McCartney’s 2020 song, ‘The Kiss of Venus’.
Heaping praise on Fike, McCartney said, “It’s a good little track. Yeah, Dominic really reimagined it. It was great.”
It’s not just Fike that McCartney has a history with on his playlist; Donovan was a close friend during the 1960s while he was in The Beatles, and he also grew close to Jimmy Buffett during the later years of the late singer’s life.
Additionally, of course, McCartney enjoyed a brief creative partnership with ‘All of the Lights’ hitmaker Kanye West during the 2010s.
McCartney’s new album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, is set to arrive on May 28th, providing us all with new music for playlists of our own.
According to press materials, the recording process, which was overseen by producer Andrew Watt, took place over five years in London and Sussex.
It’s also stated that the album finds McCartney “candid, vulnerable and deeply reflective mood, writing with rare openness about his childhood in post-war Liverpool, the resilience of his parents, and early adventures shared with George Harrison and John Lennon long before the world had ever heard of Beatlemania.”
