Punk icon Patti Smith has been forced to cancel a scheduled performance in Italy after falling ill with after being taken to hospital with a “sudden illness”.

Smith is currently on an eight-date tour of the European country which began in Ancona on November 28th. Her most recent took place on December 9th at Modena Cathedral but due to health problems, the musician cancelled her show at the Duse Theatre in Bologna on December 12th.

Italian publication TG Com 24 states that Smith became unwell while in Bologna and was taken to the Maggiore hospital. The specifics of her illness haven’t been disclosed or how long she is expected to receive care.

In a statement, the Duse Theatre wrote: “With great regret, we inform the kind audience that Patti Smith’s concert will not be able to go on stage due to a sudden illness that struck the artist.”

The message concluded: “We are all sorry for the inconvenience caused by this news. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to the artist.”

Furthermore, Smith is set to play shows in Chicago and New York later this month. She also recently announced details of two shows in Dublin at Vicar Street next June.

Earlier this year, Smith made an appearance at Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg’s last-ever school strike in Stockholm. For the last five years, Thunberg went on strike every Friday and ahead of the final one, she wrote on Twitter: “When I started striking in 2018, I could never have expected that it would lead to anything. After striking every day for three weeks, we were a small group of children who decided to continue doing this every Friday. And we did, which is how Fridays For Future was formed.”

Her next performance is scheduled for the Malibran theatre in Venice on Thursday, December 14.

It remains unclear whether Patti will be well enough to take to the stage.

After this, Patti will be heading to the States for gigs in Chicago and Brooklyn.

Her tour is also due to continue into 2024, with the Chicago-born star playing In Dublin, Ireland next June.
