Oscars 2025 nominations: Margaret Qualley surprisingly overlooked for ‘Best Supporting Actress’
Margaret Qualley has been overlooked by the Oscars 2025 after her performance in The Substance wasn’t rewarded with a ‘Best Supporting Actress’ nomination.
Qualley was widely acclaimed for her role in Coralie Fargeat’s body horror film, and supporters were surprised when her co-star Demi Moore landed a nomination for ‘Best Actress’, but Qualley didn’t follow suit.
This is especially surprising when you consider the characters in the film are effectively two halves of a whole. In fact, when Moore won her historic Golden Globe for the part, she proclaimed Qualley to be “the other half of me that I couldn’t have done without”.
The blow may have been tempered, however, by the fact that The Substance picked up five nominations overall, including the hallowed ‘Best Picture’. Fargeat also picked up a nomination for ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Original Screenplay’, while the film also nabbed a ‘Best Makeup and Hairstyling’ nomination.
Many observers are pointing out how important this is for the horror genre, which has classically been ignored by the Academy Awards more often than not. It’s the first horror film since Get Out to receive such attention from the Academy, and fans will be waiting with bated breath to see if it can win the big one on March 2nd, 2025.
