Oscars 2025: The complete list of nominations
With the Academy Awards set to take place on March 2nd in Los Angeles, the full list of nominations has been released for the Oscars ceremony.
The nominations have arrived belatedly in 2025. For this year’s event, they were originally set to be released on January 17th, 2025. However, due to the tragic Los Angeles wildfires, which have cost 27 lives in the area, voting was first extended until January 14th and later extended again until January 17th.
Despite facing calls, including from Stephen King, to cancel this year’s Oscars due to the natural disaster in Los Angeles, the Academy revealed their plans to continue with the ceremony on March 2nd as originally planned.
In a statement, CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang shared: “We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community. The Academy has always been a unifying force within the film industry, and we are committed to standing together in the face of hardship.”
The Los Angeles fires have obliterated the home of the film industry, and the Academy wants this year’s ceremony to bring the people of the county together during this time of difficulty. They explained, “We also look forward to honouring our frontline workers who have aided with the fires, recognizing those impacted, and encouraging people to join the Academy in supporting the relief efforts. We will get through this together and bring a sense of healing to our global film community.”
The Oscars will be hosted by Conan O’Brien. Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott will reveal the nominations at a ceremony in Los Angeles, broadcast on YouTube.
As ever, some pictures took pride of place among many different categories. Adrien Brody led the way for The Brutalist, picking up a controversial nomination for ‘Best Actor’ while the movie also had nods for ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for Guy Pearce among a total of nine nominations.
Timothée Chalamet will be contending the ‘Best Actor’ category alongside Brody as his depiction of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown was acknowledged amid seven nominations that also included the coveted ‘Best Picture’ prize, as well as the blockbuster Dune: Part Two. Elsewhere in that category were nominations for Sean Baker’s Anora, The Substance, which also saw Demi Moore grab a nomination for ‘Best Actress’, Wicked, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys and Ralph Fiennes’ Conclave, completing the category.
Cynthia Erivo picked up a nomination for ‘Best Actress’ for her landmark role in Wicked. The musical picked up a host of nominations, including a nod for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ for Ariana Grande. Emilia Pérez was another stand-out performer, grabbing nominations in most major categories, 11 in total, including two in the ‘Best Original Song’ category.
While those two movies showed the world that musicals aren’t quite dead, it seemed as though the Academy had finally turned its attention toward horror movies, too. With both The Substance and Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu featuring prominently among the nominations, with six and four nominations, respectively.
