Oscars 2024: Wes Anderson wins first-ever Oscar for ‘The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar’
An Academy Award isn’t the be-all and end-all to judge any filmmaker’s legacy, but the Oscars 2024 saw Wes Anderson, long heralded as a pivotal filmmaker by the cinematic world, win his first award.
Since making his feature-length directorial debut on 1996’s Bottle Rocket, Anderson has carved out a distinct niche as independent cinema’s foremost purveyor of off-kilter and eccentric dramatic comedies, which makes it a touch ironic that it wasn’t a full-length film that landed him the prize.
Having previously gone home empty-handed on his first seven nominations, losing out on awards for ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director’ to ‘Best Original Screenplay’ and ‘Best Animated Feature’, Anderson has finally struck gold after teaming up with Netflix for a quartet of Roald Dahl shorts.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar was selected as the cream of the crop, and the Benedict Cumberbatch-starring fantasy has been named the winner of the ‘Best Live-Action Short’ for delivering a whimsical 39 minutes of pure Anderson. Previous to this year’s ceremony, Anderson had received seven Oscar nominations, with only 2014’s Grand Budapest Hotel being given a nod for ‘Best Picture’.
Cumberbatch’s wealthy title character decides to take on the challenge of a lifetime by mastering and harnessing the power of a very particular style of yoga, which he then uses to try and cheat at gambling as one does.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar was immediately followed up by The Swan, The Rat Catcher, and Poison as Anderson and Netflix quadrupled down on realising the author’s works in live-action, but the former was decreed as the best of the bunch and submitted for Oscars consideration.
It proved to be the shrewdest call in the end because, at long last, Anderson finally has one of the most prestigious prizes in the industry to call his very own, even if it didn’t come from his litany of acclaimed theatrically-released endeavours.
