Oscars 2024: Academy Awards reveal ‘Best Director’ nominees

Following a year of incredible new releases, the Academy Awards have announced the nominees for ‘Best Director’. The nominations have been announced by Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The 96th Academy Awards ceremony is set to take place on March 10th, honouring the best movies of 2023. Thousands of celebrities will gather at Ovation Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre for the prestigious event, which Jimmy Kimmel will host.

Unsurprisingly, Christopher Nolan bagged a ‘Best Director’ nod for his biopic Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy as the eponymous protagonist who helped develop the first atomic bomb. The movie was released back in July, clashing with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, spawning the Barbenheimer phenomenon. Gerwig’s movie was a hit with audiences and left many surprised that she has not been nominated for ‘Best Director’.

However, Martin Scorsese has secured himself a ‘Best Director’ nod for Killers of the Flower Moon, which makes it his tenth nomination. The epic crime drama, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone, was highly praised upon its release, grossing over $156million worldwide. Scorsese has only won ‘Best Director’ once before with his 2006 film The Departed.

Jonathan Glazer has been nominated for the coveted prize for his movie The Zone of Interest. The movie stars Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller, the latter of whom also appeared in Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall. The director has previously helmed movies such as Sexy Beast and Under the Skin, but this is his first Oscar nomination.

Additionally, Yorgos Lanthimos has earned a nomination for Poor Things, starring Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe, and Justine Triet has earned her first Academy Award nomination for directing Anatomy of a Fall.
